| What type of boundary? | Destructive plate margin. As the more dense and oceanic Carribean crust is being pushed down as the more bouyant continental North-American plate is lifted over. |
| Causes | Small eruptions triggered many lava domes in the stratovolcano. |
| Primary Effects | 2/3 of the whole Island (mainly southern) was covered in ash, tephra, and lava. 50% of the pop was evacuated to the safe North of Montserrat. 23 people died. Plymouth, the capital, became a ghost-town and the main airport was closed down. |
| Secondary Effects | Many residents had to endure harsh conditions in the North temporarily. Over half the population have left and not returned, which also has affected the delincing tourist industry. |
| Short-term Responses | Large-scale evacuation by British Navy and over £41 million aid given by the British. |
| Long-term Responses | The MVO (Montserrat Volcano Observatory) was set up to provide better and quicker warnings. An exclusion zone was made as the size of the existing dome had serious danger fo the extent of pyroclastic activity. New infrastructure including two schools and an airport were built to improve the North's services. |
