Pacioli was 50 years old in 1494, when his fifth book was publicated , summa de arithmetica, geometria, proportioni et proportionalita in Venice. It was written as a guide for mathematical and accounting studies.
Perhaps the best proof that Pacioli's work was consideed potentially significant, even at the timeof publication, was thevery fact that it was printed on November 10, 1494. Gutenberg had, just aquarter century earlier, invented metal type, and it was still an extremely expensiveproposition to print a book.
The Summa book has 36 short chapters on bookkeeping: They contained all the instructions in the conduction of a bussiness and the information about his assets and liabilities.
