Coding, capacity and duration

- Once information gets into the memory system it is stored in different forms depending on memory store.
- Alan Baddeley (1966)
- Gave different lists of words to four groups of participants to remember.
- Group 1 (acoustically similar) words sounding similar
- Group 2 (acoustically dissimilar) words sounding different
- Group 3 (semantically similar) words with similar meanings
- Group 4 (semantically dissimilar) words that all have different meanings
- Participants were shown the original words and had to recall them in the original order
- When they had to do this recall task immedicately they tended to do worse with acoustically similar words (STM recall.)
- When asked to recall the word list after a time interval of 20 mins (LTM recall) they did worse with semantically similar words
- The study suggests info is coded semantically in LTM.
