Section 2:Input and Output devices
Part 1: Manual Input devices
- Input Devices are hardware devices that allowed data to entered into a computer. The two main input devices are Manual input devices and Direct input devices
- Manual input devices are data that is input to the computer by hands (people usually do most of the work).
- Keyboard
- Keyboard are one of the most commonly used manual input devices. Key boards are used to input the following into the computer: text, numbers and instructions. Most keyboards use a QWERTY key layout. Ergonomic Keyboards are special keyboards that have been developed to reduce health problems.
- Keyboards are normally used to input data into applications such as Microsoft Word(Entering text into word processing applications).
- Numeric Keypads
- Numeric Keypads are used to enter numbers into a computer devices, some numeric keypads allow you to enter symbols and text.
- There's some types of numeric keypads that can type simple text and symbol, such as: ATM and telephones
- Pointing Devices
- Pointing Devices are used to control a pointer, pointing devices are frequently used in Graphical User Interface. There are three types of pointing devices: Mouse, Tracker ball and Touchpad.
- There's two types of mouse, ball mouse and optical mouse. The ball mouse have a ball under to detect movement, and the optical mouse is using the reflected light to detect movement.
- Touchpad is a replacement for the mouse, it is used in laptops. It have the same uses as mouse do, touchpad have two buttons.
- Keyboard
- Direct input devices are data that is input to the computer directly by a machine/devices.
- Remote Control
- It is used to control other devices using infra red light. Buttons on the remote control can perform many function such as: changing the channel, increasing or decreasing the volume or selecting chapters of the film. Home entertainment system use remote control such as: Hi-Fi system, blue ray player and so on. Industry uses remote control to command what the machine does.
- Joystick
- Joystick is also use to control item. There are two main parts to joystick, the handle stick and button Joystick are mainly use for games. They control character and object, industry machine
- Touch Screen
- Pressing the button on the screen allow the input command to get in to the computer. Giving ability to us(human) to touch or press. Touch screen are more efficient.
- Scanner
- Scanner are used to enter information on paper to computer. It capture an analogue image of the document. It converts the receive analogue image from the scanner and send it into the
- Graphic Tablet
- Graphic Tablet are used by artist and designers to easily create and store digital graphics in a computer. A graphics tablet can be drawn on a special pen called a 'stylus'
- Light Pens
- Light Pens are quite old technology and can be use for alternatives to mice, touch screen or graphic tablet. Currently light pen are more often for CRT monitors.
- Microphones
- Microphone are used to input analogue sounds into a digital computer. Able to communicate with each others and including friends on the internet.
- Digital Cameras
- Digital Cameras store digital photograph on a memory card and these image can easily be transfer onto a computer for viewing or editing
- Web Cameras
- Web camera are similar to digital cameras in their function but they are directly connected to the computer and currently do not have memory storage.
- Section 2.2: Direct Input Devices
- Part 1
- Magnetic Stribe Reader
- It reads the information from magnetic stripes found on bank cards, membership card or hotels door cards etc.
- Chip and Pin Reader
- These allow people to pay goods and services electronically at EFTPOS terminals and etc.
- Barcode Scanner/Reader
- Used to read information on the product's barcode. The barcode is represented on product and holds information about each product's including: Product ID number, Manufacturer and Country of Origin.
- Optical Mark Reader (OMR)
- System automatically reads marks made on pencil or pen. Once the information on the computer in could analysed it to simpler
- Optical Character Reader (OCR)
- Optical Character Reader consist of a scanner with a special software. OCR allow us to scan text on paper(hardcopy) into computer.
- Magnetic Ink Character Recognition (MICR)
- MICR is a system which can read information printed on a special ink. This special ink is use to write customers account number's on the bottom of the cheque.
- Section 2.3: Sensor
- Sensor is a device that automatically inputs data into a computer system, where the data is constantly changing and can be measured.
- Example of a sensor: Temperature, Pressure, Light, Sound and pH.

- Section 2.5: Control Devices
- Control Device is a output device that work in conjunction with sensor input devices and commands from computers in order to control a process. Example of Control Device: Motor, Buzzer, Heater and Light/Lamp.
