Developments
Britain splits off from war
US and USSR have arms race with nuclear weapons
America get worried
Truman Doctrine- give money to countries threatened by communism
Marshall plan- put truman doctrine into action, stopping poverty and communism
NATO- north atlantic treaty organisation, all countries would back eachother up if attacked
Warsaw pact- like NATO but for communists
Khrushchev takes over after Stalin dies (1953) and he wants a peaceful co existance so it eases tensions
Cuban missile crisis
USSR place missiles in cuba which reach US
America spot missiles 14
Bay of pigs, 1961, tried to attack cuba, fail
in Cuba, Castro overthrew Batista to make Cuba communist

USSR send US letter admitting missiles but saying there could be a compromise

before WW2 France ruled
During WW2 Japan ruled
France tried to regain it, there was a war 1946-1954, country split in two
South- Capitalist, US supported it, led by Ngo Dinh Diem a brutal dictator, Vietcong rebelled in south
North, Communist, USSR supported it, led by Ho Chi Minh, Viet minh
8 Mar 1965 US troops entered
ended in 1975

Gulf of Tonkin, North vietnam shiop fired torpedo at US ship- gave excuse for US to enter vietnam
Vietnamese tactics- guerilla warfare, mass troops, didnt give in, 'hands on'
US tactics- new equipment, Bombing (rolling thunder), Search and destroy
US left because: Bad US army tactics, Vietnam tactics, US public opinion, Hearts and minds in vietnam
US left vietnam by: Vietnamesation (pull out, increase south strength), start peace talks (Henry kissinger and Le Duc Tho, 1973 peace agreed)
Tet offensive- north vietnam attack on south
My Lai massacre- US kill civilians by 'mistake'
