Storage Devices!

Storage Devices!

1. Solid State

   • Disadvantages
     • An SSD is more expensive than an HDD in terms of dollar per GB. This is one of the primary disadvantages of a solid-state drive.
     • Current SSDs in the market have limited storage capacity. Computers or devices with an SSD storage system usually have a base storage capacity of 128GB.
   • Examples
     • Phones, Tablets and Gaming PCs/Laptops
   • Advantages
     • An HDD consumes more power because it relies on the rotation of the magnet-coated metal platter for reading and writing data. An SSD has no moving parts and it does not require mechanical work to become operational.
     • Faster than hard disk drives: Because an SSD has no mechanical parts
     • Because an SSD has no moving or mechanical parts, it is more durable to drops and shudders thereby making it more resilient

2. Purpose

   • What do we use it for?
     • Storing and Profiling Data

3. Magnetic

   • Examples
     • PCs, Desktop Computers, Laptops and Game Consoles
   • Advantages
     • Cost Effective
     • Higher capacity than all others
     • Fastest Of All Of The Different types of storage
   • Disadvantages
     • Far slower to access data than ROM or RAM chips.
     • If any area of the tape is damaged or broken, it can lead to the entire role being useless.
     • There is only a small amount of space to record data on magnetic tape.

4. Optical

   • Examples: BluRay, CDs and DVDs
   • Disadvantages
     • The complex electronics at both ends of the line tends to be more expensive
     • Needs specialist expertise to lay fibre and many installers are more familiar with copper cable
     • Worst Storage
   • Advantages
     • Great Bandwidth
     • High Speed
