King Duncan

1. Polite

   • The King visits Macbeth at his castle
     • "This castle hath a pleasant seat. The air Nimbly and sweetly recommends itself Unto our gentle senses" (1.6.1-3)
   • Duncan tells Macbeth he hasn't thanked him enough
     • "Would thou hadst less deserved, That the proportion both thanks and payment Might have been mine! Only I have left to say, More is thy due than more than all can pay" (1.4.21)
   • When King Duncan sees the wounded Sergeant
     • "So well thy words become thee as thy wounds; they smack of honor both. Go get him surgeons" (1.2.47-48)

2. Generous

   • The King gives Macbeth the title, Thane of Cawdor
     • "No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive, Our bosom interest. Go pronounce his present death, And with his former title greet Macbeth" (1.2.72-74)
   • Names Malcolm Prince of Cumberland
     • "And you who's places are the nearest, know We will establish our estate upon Our eldest, Malcolm, Whom we name hereafter The Prince of Cumberland." (1.4.43-46)
   • He feels bad for not thanking Macbeth enough
     • "Only I have left to say, More is thy due than more than all can pay" (1.3.23-24)

3. Respectful

   • Ross enters from Fife and explains a battle to King Duncan"
     • "Great Happiness!"(1.2.66)
   • He shows respect to Macbeth when he names him Thane of Cawdor
     • "What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won" (1.2.76)
   • King Duncan is respectful to Banquo when he says he deserves no less than Macbeth
     • "Welcome hither. I have begun to plant thee, and will labor To make thee full of growing. Noble Banquo, That hast no less deserved, nor must be known No less to have done so, let me infold thee And hold thee to my heart" (1.4.32-37)
