computing homework

  1. computational thinking has 4 key techniques

    • 1) decomposition is breaking down a complex problem or system into smaller parts or more manageable parts.
      • 2) pattern recognition looking for similarities and trends among a problem
        • 3) abstraction is the process of filtering out/ignoring the characteristics of patterns that we dont need in order to concentrate on those that we do.
          • 4) an algorithm is a well defined procedure that allows a computer to solve a problem. another way to describe an algorithm is a sequence of unambiguous instructions.
  2. variables and data types

    • 1)the most common data types are: Numeric integer - whole numbers e.g 24,67...
      • 2)character- a single character of alpha numeric data which takes up 1 byte of storage
        • 3) boolean - a variable which can only have one of two values e.g true/false
  3. secondary storage

    • secondary storage refers to storage devices and media that are not constantly accessible by a computer system
    • examples include external hard drives, portable, CDs and DVDs
  4. CPU/RAM

    • a central processing unit, also called a central proccesor or main processor is the electronic circularity within a computer that carries out instructions of a computer program
    • RAM is the hardware in a computing device where the operating system, application programs and data in current use are kept so they can be quickly reached by the devices processor.
  5. network types

    • 1) personal area network (PAN)
    • 2) local area network (LAN)
      • 3) wireless local are network
        • 4) wide area network
