  1. The UN and World Peace
    1. Founded in 1945 after World War 2
      1. international body set up to promote world peace and co-operation
        1. Secretary general is a Korean named Ban Ki-Moon
          1. The UN send peace-keepers and recommend actions like sanctions, to stop any threats
          2. How religious organisations try to promote world peace
            1. Pax Christi are Catholics that promote peaceful alternatives for war by spreading conflict resolution in schools as well as open anti-racism workshops and writing to world leaders
              1. Ghandi centre for global non-violence are Hindus that go into war zones to negotiate peace, help out in schools and use non-violent resolutions for peace; they want peace in India and Pakistan
                1. AHIMSA - NON-VIOLENCE
              2. Why wars occur
                1. RELIGION
                  1. Catholics and Protestants in Ireland
                  2. ECONOMICS
                    1. over resources like water and oil
                      1. Economic crisis in Zimbabwe has led them to migrate to South Africa, where they have been attacked
                    2. POLITICS
                      1. the cold war (soviet union and USA)
                        1. the Korean war (in 1949)
                        2. NATIONALISM
                          1. World War 2 (Nazis)
                            1. Rwanda (Hutus and Tutsies)
                          2. Just War
                            1. fought for the right reasons and in the right way
                              1. CRITERIA
                                1. must be fought by a legal recognized authority e.g. Govt. or UN etc
                                  1. cause of the war must be just
                                    1. must be fought with the intention to establish good or correct evil
                                      1. must be reasonable chance of sucess
                                        1. must be the last resort (diplomatic negotiations, tried and failed)
                                          1. innocent civilians must not be involved
                                        2. Attitudes to war

                                            1. PACIFISM
                                              1. refusing to fight in wars
                                                1. the way modern warfare affects so many innocent people means it can never be just
                                                  1. Jesus taught Christians to love their enemies

                                                    1. defend the weak and bring peace to the world

                                                        1. believe they should follow Ahimsa (non-violence)
                                                          1. to take life will darken your soul and push you further down the caste system, longer wait till you achieve Moksha and Nirvana
                                                          2. JUST WAR
                                                            1. right to fight if attacked as stated in the Bhagavad Gita
                                                              1. 'There is no greater good for a warrior than to fight in a righteous war' 2;31-32

                                                            1. Duty to protect the innocent
                                                              1. Sinful to use violence without a just cause
                                                                1. Golden rule; treat others how you would like to be treated.
                                                                2. HINDUISM
                                                                  1. Involves violence; against ahimsa
                                                                    1. Brings bad karma which will delay moksha
                                                                      1. Denying the victim's human rights which Hindus should protect
                                                                    2. Religious conflicts within families
                                                                      1. Conflicts can occur if children:
                                                                        1. No longer wish to follow their parent's religion, but the parents want them to
                                                                          1. Want to marry someone of a different religion
                                                                            1. Disagree with their parents over moral issues, like abortion, contraception or sex before marriage etc.
                                                                              1. Become more religious than their parents
                                                                                1. radicalized muslims
                                                                              2. sexuality
                                                                                1. Catholics are against gay intercourse
                                                                                2. divorce
                                                                                  1. adultery
                                                                                  2. Forgiveness and Reconcilliation
                                                                                    1. CHRISTIANS
                                                                                      1. believe they should forgive those who hurt them or attack them; like Jesus did on the cross
                                                                                        1. should try to settle conflicts and bring reconciliation between people
                                                                                          1. 'And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments' - Luke 23:34
                                                                                          2. HINDUISM
                                                                                            1. bring reconciliation to conflicts to achieve good karma
                                                                                              1. some believe the law of cause and effect means no forgiveness
                                                                                                1. others believe that forgiving others is the way to moksha
