  1. Before Vesalius
    1. People used to only believe in Galen's theories
    2. They used to do everything the church said
    3. They disected to show that Galen was right (even though he wasn't) not to check or challenge his ideas.

      1. He changed some peoples ideas by disecting and showing everyone that Galen was incorrect about the liver lobes, the heart and the bottom jaw

    1. Everyone believed Galen who had said that new blood was constantly being manufactured in the body to replace the burnt up blood in the body like how wood is burnt in a fire
    2. People believed everything Galen said

      1. He proved that the heart acts as a pump, pumping blood around the body

  1. Learned surgery as an apprentice to his brother, they worked at the royal hospital, The Hotel Dieu, Paris
  2. Spent 20 years as an army surgeon starting in 1536
3. What did people believe
  1. Before Paré
    1. Practice in war time had helped surgeons make minor improvements to techniques but no major break throughs
    2. Open wounds were treated by putting a red-hot iron called a cautery over the wound to seal the blood vessels
  2. After Paré
    1. Positive short term impact
      1. He could heal patients wounds with a paste he had read about made of: Egg Yolk, Oil of Roses and Turpentine
    2. Positive long term impact
      1. His work became well known
      2. Ligatures did stop bleeding
      3. He encouraged surgeons to think for themselves
      4. He showed that improvements were possible
