Static routing
It's critical to any data network
- Because
- Transfer information via an internetwork from source to destination
- Because
Remote network range
- Manually
- are manually entered into the route table via static routes
- Dynamically
- are automatically discovered using a dynamic routing protocol
- Manually
Main uses
- Makes it easier to maintain the routing table
- Provides routing to and from internal route networks
- Uses a single default route to represent a route to any network that does not have a more specific match
Static route applications
- Connect to a more specific network
- Connect an internal route router
- Summarize routing table entries
- Create a backup path
Types of static routes
- Standard static route
- Default static route
- Unsulating static route
- Floating static route
Configuring static and default routes
- IPv4
- Next hop options
- It can be identified by an IP address, an output interface, or both
- Next hop path
- On a next hop static route, only the next hop IP address is specified. The output interface is derived from the next hop.
- Directly connected static route
- Configuring a static route directly connected to an outbound interface allows the routing table to resolve this interface in a single search, not two
- Fully specified static route
- A fully specified static route has both the output interface and the next hop IP address determined.
- Next hop path
- Checking a static route
- -show ip route. -show ip route static. -show ip route Red.
- It can be identified by an IP address, an output interface, or both
- Setting up a default static route
- IP route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 ::/24
- Verification of a predetermined static path
- show ip route static
- shows the content of the static paths in the routing table. Observe the asterisk (*) next to the path with the code "S".
- show ip route static
- ip route network-address subnet-mask { ip-addresss | exit-intf }
- Next hop options
- IPv6
- Static paths for IPv6 are configured with the global configuration ipv6 route command.
- ipv6 route ipv6-prefix/prefix-length ( ipv6-address | exit-intf )
- It can be implemented as
- Standard static path IPv6
- Default static path IPv6
- Summary static path IPv6
- Floating static path IPv
- Next hop options
- Next jump IPv6 static path
- only the IPv6 address of the next jump is specified
- Static route IPv6 directly connected
- only the router output interface is specified
- Completely specified IPv6 static path
- the IPv6 address of the next jump and the output interface are specified
- Next jump IPv6 static path
- Static paths for IPv6 are configured with the global configuration ipv6 route command.
- Static floating routes
- Floating static routes are static routes that have a greater administrative distance than that of another static route or that of dynamic routes.
- common routing managed distances
- EIGRP = 90 IGRP = 100 OSPF = 110 IS-IS = 115 RIP = 120
- Set up a floating IPv4 static path
- the global configuration command ip route is used and an administrative distance is specified.
- IPv4 floating static path test
- traceroute ( ip-address )
- Configuration of a floating static path IPv6
- To configure floating IPv6 static paths the global configuration command ipv6 route is used and an administrative distance is specified.
- IPv4
