Cells, what can cells contain?
- Cells
- A cell reference always starts with a letter and ends with a number
- A range of cells is a set of cells in a row or columns
- Data entered into cells can be different data types e.g. text, number, currency, date, percentage etc.
- Labels
- any text in a cell describing the data in a row or column
- Data
- any values (text or numbers) that are entered for the use of calculation
- Formulas and functions
- mathematical calculations carried out automatically
- Cells
Formulas
- Must start with an =
- Formulas perform calculations on cell contents
- The result of a formula is automatically recalculated when something on the spreadsheet changes
Functions
- Must start with an =
- specialised calculations built in
- name describes what the function can do
Formatting
- Font style, size, colour, border style, alignment, cell colour. Multiple cells can be merged in to one cell (e.g long title in one box)
- Data types: Currency, number, real, whole number, date, text
Types of Graphs
- Specific data can be selected on a spread sheet and a chart/graph of this data can be created.
- Bar charts – to compare values
- Pie charts – to show how a total is divided among a number of different categories.
- Line graph – display trends
benefits of using spreadsheets
- Automatic recalculation- if you've calculated something and you have changed the data then the calculation will also change
- Accurate calculations- If the formulas/functions have been set up properly then the calculation should always be correct
- Graphs/Charts- you can choose any chart/graph and any cells where you want the chart to be made.
