Input/output Device Functions

1. Touch screen

   • Input/Output
   • Used widely on mobile phones, tablet and interactive whiteboards.
     • Used as an input device by tapping the screen or using gesture control. Used as an output device by viewing the display.

2. Keyboard

   • Input
   • Commonly used data entry method - the user presses a key and a code is entered in a computer

3. Pointing devices mouse

   • Input
   • A mouse is the most popular pointing and selection device used in computers

4. Microphone

   • Input
   • Microphones used to input sound into a computer

5. Barcode scanner

   • Input
   • Barcode readers are used to input data automatically from barcodes.
     • The barcode reader scans the barcode using a visable red light, which is then used to identify details of the product.

6. JoyStick/Games controller

   • Input
   • Joystick is used to play computer games by controlling the way something moves on the screen.
     • It can also be used to control devices such as wheelchairs.

7. Webcam

   • Input
   • Digital image is captured and input into the system for use in on screen display.

8. Sensor

   • Input
   • Sensors are used to detect physical variables for input into a computer control system.
     • Such as temperature, pressure and light.

9. Flat screen monitor

   • Output
   • Flat screen monitors are used to display the output from a computer system
     • They take up less space and emit less heat than the CRT screens they have replaced.

10. Speakers

    • Output
    • They use internal sound cards to create high quality audio to the output through externally connected speakers.

11. Inkjet printer

    • Output
    • Colour inkjet printers are smaller than laser printers and produce a higher quality output.
      • Normally used in the home enviroment, so speed and noise of operation is not such a problem.

12. Laser Printer

    • Output
    • Laser printers are used at home and in business. They operate quietly and print large number of quality sheets quickly.

13. LED Lights

    • Output
    • LED lights are often used as output indicators from a control system

14. Actuator

    • Output
    • Actuators are widely used as outputs from a control system; for example; it contains a motor and linkage to lift a car park barrier

15. Speciality devices

    • Many assistive technology devices are available to provide access for disabled users
      • Input devices include 'eye-tracking controllers'; foot-operated mouse, slip-and-puff switches. Brailie printers are used as an output for the blind or partially sighted user.
