The Article "THE"

1. "The" is called the definite article because it is used for things we know. You use the when the other person already knows what you are talking about.

   • Is used
     • Before people's surnames, when we refer to the whole family
       • For somebody or something specific or already mentioned.
         • For things that are unique
           • Whit the superlative od adjectives/ adverbs
             • Before names of seas, rivers, oceans deserts
               • Before groups of islands, mountain ranges and countries in the plural
                 • Before nationalities, wen we refer to the whole nation
                   • Before names of the hotels, restaurants, theares, cinemas and newspaper.

   • Isn´nt used
     • Before names of people, streets, islands, mountains, cities, countries and continents.
       • Before names of days and months
         • Before plural countable nouns or uncountable nouns.
           • Before abstract nouns
             • Before names of magazines, sports, games, colours and languages (when they are not followed by the word language)
               • Before names of squares, parks and lakes.
                 • Before the words hospital, school, work, home, bed.
                   • Before the words breakfast, lunch and dinner.
   • It is invariable in gender and number.
   • It fulfills in English the function of the, the, and the, which implies that it accompanies feminine, masculine and neutral nouns, without making a difference if they are singular or plural.
