3. Why Over-Fishing Takes Place

   • Big Ships
     • Some of today's trawlers are massive. They travel in fleets, which usually include a factory ship. This system allows them to fish for months. The fish can be stored in massive fridges.
   • Modern Equipment
     • - Echo Sounders are used to     locate fish - Motorised cranes & winches    haul huge catches - Huge nets catch tonnes of fish at a time
   • Fish are easy targets

4. If fishing continues at the current rate, fish stocks will collapse in 50 years

5. What is being done to save our fish stocks?

   • Fishing fleets have been reduced
   • Quotas
     • Have been set by the EU. These quotas limit the amount of fish countries can catch each year
   • Fishing for endangered species is forbidden
   • Fishery Protection Vessels
     • Patrol the coast to prevent illegal fishing from foreign trawlers
