Textual Analysis

1. 1. Linguistic Features of Text

   • A. Identify the Words, Phrases and Sentences that are used to define the notion of culture in the text
   • B. Identify how the imagery of text, sentence construction and language used in the manual contributes to the construction of meaning of culture
   • C. Analyse the difference in the linguistic features (Words, phrases etc. ) which are used in relation to culture from the insurgents' and counterinsurgents' narratives

2. 2. Production and Consumption of the Text

   • A. Following the Analysis of the linguistic features of the text, use the conclusions reached to identify the producers of the text
   • B. After the identification of the producers of the text, analyse the relationship between the linguistic features of the text and the producers to highlight the process and rationale of production of the text.
   • C. Using the conclusions reached in the first step, identify the potential consumers of the text based on the analysis of the linguistic features of the text.
   • D. Following the identification of the consumers, analyse the relationship between the linguistic features of the text and the process + rationale behind the consumption of the text

3. 3. Wider Social Practice to which the communicative event belongs to

   • A. Identify and describe the larger communicative event (in this case the FM 3-24 Manual) to which the specific text belongs
   • B. Identify the larger field of social practice i.e. insurgency to which the text belongs to
   • C. Describe the relationship between the text and where it is situated within the larger field of insurgency i.e. Taking into account the temporal, chronological and socio-historic order
