War and Peace

Causes
1. Freedom from an occupying or threatening power or corrupt government.
2. To stop atrocities such as genocide (mass murder) or to depose a dictator.
3. To gain land, wealth, power or important resources.
4. To defend their country against attack.
5. To defend beliefs, religion, freedom and way of life.
Positives
1. Awareness of and advances in new medical treatments.
2. Research and development of new products and technologies.
Negatives
1. Death and injuries to the armed forces and civilians.
2. Survivors can have long lasting physical and mental injuries.
3. Cities are destroyed, homes lost, families and friends separated and children orphaned.
4. The financial cost- every hour £100 million is spent worldwide on weapons of war.
5. Disease and famine can spread when water supplies have been contaminated.
6. People become refugees, fleeing from their homes and seeking safety elsewhere.

Peacemakers
1. The Red Cross & Red Crescent
  1. -Neutral (no influences) -medical care for wounded soldiers -search for missing people -protect civilians
2. Irene Sendler
  1. -Offered Jews food and shelter -created false documents so they didn't get arrested -showed solidarity -smuggled children from the Warsaw ghetto -was tortured but carried on her work -reunited children with families
3. UN
  1. -Persuades countries to settle differences without fighting -helps countries cooperate -sends peacekeeping forces during conflict -protects human rights -tries war crimes -establish world peace
4. NATO
  1. A military alliance who, after signing a treaty, protects its allies when attacked.
Christianity
1. 'Nations will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war again.'
2. 'All those who live by the sword will die by the sword.'
3. 'Now go and attack... and completely destroy everything they have.'
4. 'An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.'
Islam
1. 'Repel the evil deed with what is better.'
2. 'If enemies incline towards peace you should also do so.'
3. 'Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you.'
4. 'Attack anyone who attacks you to the same extent.'
Just War
1. Must be started by a proper authority e.g. ruler of a country
2. Should be fought for good intention such as promote good and avoid evil.
3. Must be the last resort after other ways have been tried first.
4. Reasonable chance of success.
5. Just cause.
Holy War
1. Should be authorised and led by God or a religious leader.
2. There is a spiritual reward for those who die as a marty, fighting in the name of God.
3. A religious goal/aim e.g. defend or spread religion.
Pacifism
1. Belief that violence against other human beings is wrong.
2. Sanctity of Life- God created life therefore only he can take it away.
3. War damages the environment and wastes precious lives and resources.
4. Causes suffering, bitterness and hatred.
5. Quakers: every person is loved and guided by God so should be respected.
Weapons of Mass Destruction
1. Cause mass death
2. Pollute the atmosphere
3. Uncontrollable
4. End wars
5. Nuclear
  1. Radioactive fallout kills more than original explosion.
  2. If used today they would cause a nuclear winter lasting months.
  3. Destroy life on earth.
