Ground Water: fills the space between soil and rock particles in the ground.
- Aquifers: Areas of permeable rock that collect useable amounts of ground water that can be extracted through wells
- Biodegredable: A substance made of organic compounds that can be broken down by organisms in the environment.
- Bioremediation: Using organisms (often bacteria) to clean up waste (may use plant growth/removal)
- bioreactors: Tanks of bacteria used for bioremediation (specific method)
- Aerobic – requiring oxygen
- Anaerobic – not requiring oxygen
- they often live in sanitary landfills and can help degrade trash and other wastes

Must treat sewage water and remove nitrated and phosphates before returning water for use
- may use high intensity UV light to remove bacteria and viruses
Primary treatment physically separates large solids and suspended sediments.
- Secondary treatment removes much of the organic compounds by bacterial decomposition. the sludge is removed and the remaining effluent liquid is removed of of any bacteria through UV
- tertiary treatment, percolation through soil into ground water, passage through a trickling bed evaporator and/or a lagoon marsh removes the nitrates and phosphates that remain.
- Some plants can also be used to remove heavy metals from the effluent.
- harzardous waste: A discarded material containing poisonous, toxic, flammable, explosive, or corrosive substances.
- Sanitary Landfills: crushed up trash covered with a layer of soil, have a clay and/or plastic liner.
- A covered landfill with a lined bottom to catch any leachate.
- The leachate collects in a layer of gravel and pipes are used to remove any liquid waste collected here.
- leachate: Liquid that has filtered through (and produced by decomposition of) a landfill that may contain dissolved pollutants.
