Coordinate Geometry

Coordinate Geometry

1. Axes

   • An axis is a line with respect to which a curve or figure is drawn
     • The horizontal line is called X-axis while the vertical line is called Y-axis

2. Cartisian plane

   • The cartesian plane is a two-dimensional coordinate plane formed by the intersection of two perpendicular lines.
     • The system which we have described to label points in a plane is also known as the Cartesian System. The word Cartesian is derived from Descartes.

3. Coordinates

   • Coordinates are numbers which determine the position of a point or a shape in a particular space
     • Abscissa is the x- coordinate ; parallel to the x-axis
     • Ordinate is the y-coordinate ; parallel to the y-axis

4. Quadrants

   • The two axes (X and Y) divide the cartesian plane into four regions, or quadrants.
