Cation Formation

1. Cations are the positive ions formed by the loss on one or more electons.

2. Na →Na+ + e− 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1 1s2 2s2 2p6 (octet)

3. The term isoelectronic refers to an atom and an ion of a different atom (or two different ions) that have the same electron configuration.

4. Cations form when an atom loses one or more electrons

5. The resulting cation has the electron configuration of the noble gas atom in the row above it in the periodic table.
