Text Genres and Types

1. Recount

   • Background information about who, where and when.
   • Series of events in chronological order.
     • A recount tells what happened.
   • Personal expressions of attitude and feelings.

2. Information Report

   • Opening general definition or classification.
   • Sequence of related statements about the topic.
     • An information reported is used to present information about something. It describes an entire class of things, where natural or made.
   • Concluding Statement.

3. Narrative

   • Orientation : who/what, where and when.
   • Complication .
     • A narrative tells a story.
   • Series of events.
   • Resolution.

4. Exposition

   • Point of view is stated.
   • justification of arguments in a logical order.
     • An exposition puts forward an argument or a particular point of view.
   • Summing up of argument.

5. Explanation

   • A general statement.
   • A series of events in chronological order.
     • An explanation makes clear how or why things are as they are, or how things work.
   • Concluing statement.

6. Description

   • Opening statement introducing the subject.
   • Characteristic features of the subject.
     • A discription details the characteristic features of a particular thing.
   • Concluding statement.

7. Procedure

   • Opening statement of goal or aim.
   • Materials required listed in order of use.
     • A procedure tells how to do something
   • Series of steps listed in chronological order.

8. Discussion

   • Opening statement presenting the issue.
   • Arguments or evidence for diffetent points of view.
     • A discussion presents information and opinions about more than one side of an issue.
   • Concluding recommendation.

9. Response

   • Structure of a review.
     • Context- background information on the text.
     • Description of the text.
       • A response is used to summarise, analyse and respond to literary texts. A response may be a reviw or a personal response
     • Concluding statement.
   • Structure of a person review.
     • Context- background information on the text.
     • Personal opinion and/or reaction
