DEFINING AND NON-DEFINING

1. These define or characterize the noun or pronoun that precedes them in the sentence

2. Defining relative clauses

   • Provide information necessary to identify the subject
     • Example
       • this is the book which i bought yesterday
         • En esta frase se esta usando which, pero tambien se podria usar that
   • There are no commas in the sentences
   • That can replace who, whom which
   • exception
     • We can omit the relative pronouns, but if it acts as a relative object pronoun.

3. Relative pronouns

   • objects
     • which and that
   • peoples
     • who and that

4. Non-defining

   • Gives information not necessary to identify the subject
   • There are always commas
   • Can't use that
   • We cannot omit relatives pronouns, because they act as the subject of the relative clause.

5. DEFINING

   • examples
     • 1. this is the boy whom it hit
       • 2. Samuel is the guy that will pay us
         • 3. this is the dog sara adopted.
           • 4. People often go to the library.
             • 5. He needs someone whom he can trust.
               • 6. I have a friend whose mum is a doctor.
                 • 7. She's going to the museum which is full of interesting artefacts.
                   • 8. Let's go to a theme park where there are lots of rollercoasters.
                     • 9. I like to sit in the garden when it's sunny.
                       • 10. I have no idea why that happened.

6. NON-DEFINING

   • examples
     • 1. this is lina, who is my best friend
       • 2. my house, which is great, has 300 square meters
         • 3. my mum, who has been baking for years, made us cupcakes.
           • 4. I walk to school with my friend, whose house is next door to mine.
             • 5. My friend, whom I've known for years, came to my house today.
               • 6. The library, which is full of books, is my favourite place to go.
                 • 7. The leisure centre, where I go swimming, is just across town.
                   • 8. I've just come back from London, where John lives..
                     • 9. Yesterday I met a woman named Susan, whose husband works in London
                       • 10. We stopped at the museum, which we had never visited before.
