TROPICAL LUNG

1. HISTOPLASMOSIS

   • MICROBIOLOGY: Infection caused by the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum
     • CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS: Decay (ill feeling), fever, chest pain, dry or non-productive cough, headache, loss of appetite, dyspnea (difficulty breathing), muscle and joint pain, chills and hoarseness
       • DIAGNOSIS: Culture techniques, microscopy and the detection of antigens and antibodies.

2. PARACOCCIDIOIDES

   • MICROBIOLOGY: Infection caused by a fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis
     • CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS: It affects the skin, oral mucosa (ulcers, nasal and gastrointestinal, spleen and liver
       • Frequent finding lymphadenopathy, and the adrenal gland and all the viscera are affected
         • DIAGNOSIS: Culture medium, observation of large yeasts (frequently> 15 microns) with characteristic multiple budding (ship's rudder) represents presumptive evidence, tissue samples

3. COCCIDIOIDOMICOSIS

   • MICROBIOLOGY: Infection caused by the fungus Coccidioides
     • CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS: Fatigue (tiredness), cough, fever, shortness of breath
       • Headache, night sweats, muscle aches or joint pain, rash on the upper body or legs
         • DIAGNOSIS: It's confirmed in three ways: Identify the spheres by direct microscopic examination of the exudate, the pus aspirated from a cold abscess, the sample obtained by bronchial lavage or by endoscopy
