Fluid Intelligence
- Fluid is the ability to think abstractly, reason quickly, and problem solve independent of any previously acquired knowledge. (Salas et al., 2021)
- Fluid intelligence declines with age. (Salas et al., 2021)
- When we are kids, most of our intelligence is fluid due to the lack of life experiences. Our brain is more likely to learn new things and abstractly solve problems which leads to an increase in creativity and critical thinking. For example, I as a kid loved playing with Legos and building structures with not previous knowledge in constrcution.
- It requires logic, pattern recognition, and abstract thinking to solve new problems. (Salas et al., 2021)
- We use fluid intelligence when solving a puzzle or playing the piano for the first time. We try to find patters without any previous knowledge or training. We all have sit on a piano and start playing random notes.

- As we grow and develop, we attain more knowledge and experiences to be used throughout life. When taking a math test, the formulas and math knowledge comes from crystallized intelligence. We use this learned knowledge in our daily lives.
- Pre-existing knowledge: facts, skills, and information you learned in school or from past experience. (Salas et al., 2021)
- We utilize crystallized intelligence when you encounter tasks that require the use of previously acquired knowledge, including verbal tests in subjects like reading comprehension or grammar.
