Human Augmentation

Human Augmentation

1. Graphical User Interfaces

   • Ivan Sutherland
     • Father of Computer Graphics with the development of Sketchpad.
   • Douglas Engelbart
     • Founded the Augmentation Research Center and prototped Bush's vision as the NLS
   • Alan Kay
     • Worked with Sutherland and developed Smalltalk that he ran on "Alto"
       • "Alto" included the 1st operating system with a GUI
         • The community brought together by the ACM conference became interested in the future interaction paradigms due to the growing nature of input.
   • Steve Jobs
     • Recruited researchers from Xerox to work on more GUIs that would become the 1st mass-market ones to appear.

2. Technical Machines

   • Charles Babbage
     • "Analytic Engine" that calculates the formulas with arbitrary data
   • Ada Lovelace
     • Published the 1st algorithms executed by Babbage's machine
   • Vannevor Bush
     • Conceived the thought of the internet, hyperlinks, and databases
   • J.C.R Licklider
     • Inspired by Bush's ideas of a "thinking center" and began to move the field to human-computer interaction
