Process Oriented Programming (POP)
Definition
- Process Oriented Programming (POP) is a programming paradigm that focuses on the sequential execution of instructions or tasks, organized in the form of structured processes. Unlike more modern paradigms such as Object Oriented Programming (OOP), POP emphasizes the sequential logic of operations.
Main Features of POP
- Modularity
- Programs are divided into smaller modules or functions, each with a specific, well-defined task. This allows for better organization of the code and makes it easier to maintain.
- Sequence and Flow
- The program flow follows a linear logical sequence, meaning that tasks must be performed in a predefined order.
- Process Focus
- It focuses on the actions required to achieve a goal. Unlike OOP, which models entities as objects, POP focuses on the specific steps that must be followed.
- Reusability
- Functions written in a POP program can be reused in different parts of the program, which improves efficiency and reduces development effort.
- Modularity
Advantages of Process Oriented Programming
- Simplicity
- It is easy to learn and understand, especially for problems with a clear and defined logical workflow.
- Efficiency
- For specific problems, POP can be more efficient than other paradigms.
- Clarity in sequential processes
- POP is ideal for applications that need a linear workflow, such as mathematical calculations or serial data processing, where great flexibility is not required.
- Simplicity
Disadvantages of Process Oriented Programming
- Lack of Flexibility
- POP is less suitable for solving complex problems or those that change frequently.
- Difficulty in modeling complex systems
- It is not ideal for programs where entities interact with each other dynamically.
- Difficulty in maintenance
- As programs grow in size and complexity, it becomes more difficult to maintain and scale the code.
- Lack of Flexibility
FORTRAN
- Developed to facilitate complex scientific and numerical calculations, allowing scientists and engineers to perform operations efficiently. Translated mathematical formulas and algebraic expressions into code that computers could execute quickly.
COBOL
- Designed in the 1950s for business applications, it was one of the first high-level programming languages. Focused on handling large volumes of business data, it is still used in banking and corporate systems.
C language
- It was originally created for the UNIX operating system, but its efficiency, flexibility, and ability to interact directly with hardware have made it very popular in the development of operating systems, applications, and low-level software.
