Text-based adventure game

  1. Prescribed critearia

    • Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
      • All variables must be unique. Variables are used to store information. Every variable should be linked to the story that helps the story progress and keep moving forward.
    • You must have at least two choices for each input.
      • The story must give opportunities for the player to add their response to the story
      • Each user input should provide at least a minimum of 2 choices
    • You must use a WHILE Loop
      • The game must have a minimum of 1 WHILE loop. This is used in the code to repeat a certain block until the condition is true.
    • You must use variables that match your storyline
      • The story must use variable names that relate to the storyline. For example: Medieval times based game should not have variables called "spaceship" or "choice" because It doesn’t relate to topic.
  2. Code constructs

    • WHILE loop
      • A while loop allows you to repeat a certain block of code until the condition is true.
        • Example: While it is raining, keep holding your umbrella up. The moment it stops raining, put umbrella down.
    • FOR loops
      • for loop repeats a block of code a set number of times or through a list of items.
        • Example: Do jumping jacks 10 times
    • IF statements
      • IF statement is used to run a specific part of the code
        • Example: If temperature is over 30 degrees, print: "It is hot today."
  3. Programming elements

    • Variables
      • You give the box a name (the label) and put a piece of data inside it (the value).
        • Example: x=4
    • Arrays
      • An array is a numbered list that stores multiple pieces of data together under a single variable name.
        • Egg carton: Stores 12 eggs, if you want egg 10, you take egg_carton10
    • IF/IF ELSE
      • Used in coding that tells a program to run a specific block of code if a condition is true, and a different block of code if that condition is false
        • Example: IF it is raining outside, THEN bring an umbrella. ELSE, THEN wear sunglasses instead.
    • FOR loop
      • Programming tool used to repeat a block of code a specific number of times or go through a list of items one by one. It stops automatically when it finishes the list or reaches a set limit.
        • Do 5 jumping jacks. Repeat the code 5 times until all jumps are completed. Once completed it stops.
    • WHILE loop
      • Repeats a block of code over and over as long as a specific condition stays true.
        • WHILE it is raining, keep holding your umbrella." The moment the rain stops (the condition becomes false), you put the umbrella away (the loop ends)
  4. Algorithm constructs

    • Sequence
      • Instructions in an algorithm, that are processed one after the other. following a linear order from top to bottom
        • 1) Put toothpaste on the toothbrush. 2) Clean your teeth with the brush. 3) Rinse your mouth and the toothbrush.
    • Assignment
      • Assignment is to store a value in a variable.
    • Selection and condition
      • A decision-making part of an algorithm that lets the program choose different paths based on a condition, which is a test that results in either true or false.
    • Iteration
      • The process of repeating a specific set of steps or instructions over and over again until a specific goal or stopping condition is met. Known as the 'loop'.
  5. Ideas for story

    • Mythology
      • You were hiking with your family in the forest, then you lost them. You come across an abandoned castle and decide to explore, which you then realise is a mistake. You must make the right decisions and avoid dangers such as vampires to escape and find your family again.
    • Survival
      • A plane crashes and you are stranded in the forest all alone. The survivor must find their way back to civilisation and make the right decisions and avoid dangers.
  6. Self-determined criteria

    • Add ANSI colours
      • Colours such as blue for all user input so when play red pops up they know to make choice?
    • The story should be based on...
      • The user persona is interested in playing games based on…(topic)
    • Add ASCII art in the game that relate to the…(topic?)
      • Images such as castles to match the storyline, to engage audience
  7. Existing text based adventure games

    • Colossal cave adventure
      • Colossal cave is a text based adventure game where the user must navigate rooms, collect treasures, solve puzzles, and avoid hazards like dwarves, a troll, and a dragon.
        • Weaknesses: Game is slow paced
        • Strengths: Highly engaging and lots of exploration
    • Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy
      • Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy is a text based adventure game where the user tries to escape from the room. It is from the 19th century.
        • Strengths: The game is interactive and has humour
        • Weaknesses: Is difficult and easy to lose
