Text-Based Adventure Game
Algorithm Constructs
- Sequence
- A set of instructions processed one after the other
- Pick up toothbrush, put toothpaste on brush, ...
- A set of instructions processed one after the other
- Assignment
- The storage of a value in a variable
- x = 10
- y = "Hello, World!"
- n = 2.5
- The storage of a value in a variable
- Selection & Condition
- Selection uses a condition to select which line of the program will be executed
- IF x == 10:
- ELIF y == "Hello, World!":
- ELSE:
- Selection uses a condition to select which line of the program will be executed
- Iteration
- Used when a piece of code is repeated
- FOR i IN range(5):
- WHILE Bool == TRUE:
- Used when a piece of code is repeated
- Sequence
Coding Constructs
- IF
- Runs an algorithm when a condition is True
- IF weather == sunny:
- IF scorevar == 4:
- IF Bool == True:
- Runs an algorithm when a condition is True
- ELSE:
- Runs an algorithm when if or elif statements result as False
- IF ...: ELSE: print("not met")
- Runs an algorithm when if or elif statements result as False
- ELIF
- Literally short for "else if", allows to check another condition of previous if is not True
- ELIF y = 10:
- ELIF "bread" in bag:
- Literally short for "else if", allows to check another condition of previous if is not True
- WHILE
- Loops through a block of code as long as the condition is True
- WHILE True:
- WHILE x > 5:
- Loops through a block of code as long as the condition is True
- IF
Prescribed Criteria
- Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
- Create a usable variable using Python in the Thonny IDE
- Thonny is a beginner-based IDE (integrated developer environment) that works on Python. It can be used to create variables
- Game must have at least 10 different variables
- userName = input("Insert your name: ")
- shopChoice = input("What do you buy? ")
- Variables must be appropriately named and unique
- Create different variables that don't repeat each other
- Create a usable variable using Python in the Thonny IDE
- You must have at least two choices for each input (i.e. Yes | No, Left | Right, Buy | Sell
- Story must have input() keyword, which allows the user to type out answers.
- INPUT("Type out your answer: \n")
- Answers must have mutual exclusivity
- (Yes | No), (Right | Left), (In | Out)
- Every answer must have an outcome that branches off from the main storyline
- If the player turns left, they move on to West Forest. If right, then they move to East Forest
- Story must have input() keyword, which allows the user to type out answers.
- You must use a WHILE loop
- Game must have a minimum of 1 WHILE loop
- WHILE TRUE: (repeated cycle)
- While loop cycles through the algorithm until a condition is met or an error occurs
- An algorithm in a WHILE TRUE: statement is broken by the "break" keyword
- Game must have a minimum of 1 WHILE loop
- You must use variables that match your storyline
- Variable names must be appropriate for the storyline
- In a medieval setting, the variable should be merchantShop instead of spaceShip
- Variable names must be easy to read and describe their value
- battleChoice rather than choice_5
- Variables must be written with correct syntax and data type
- x = 5 (integer)
- n = "foo" (string)
- Variable names must be appropriate for the storyline
- Your story must have at least 10 different variables in total
Self-Determined Criteria

- Mythical characters
- Elves
- Dragons
- Humans
- Mythical characters
- Add ASCII Art
- Visual art created by arranging ASCII characters
- Dragon image
- Trophy image
- Visual art created by arranging ASCII characters
- Add ANSI colours
- Sequences that tell a renderer to change colour
- print("\033[1;32mBold green text\033[0m")
- Sequences that tell a renderer to change colour
- Base story on mythical world
Ideas for Story
- Mythical timeline
- Base the events, characters, and items on fantasy
- Elf characters
- Dragon boss
- Lightning in a jar
- Base the events, characters, and items on fantasy
- Add inventory
- Create a list that appends items throughout the game
- bag = []
- bag.append("something")
- Create a list that appends items throughout the game
- Base off of chance
- Random outcomes to random events
- import random
- direction = random.choice(["left", "right", "centre"])
- Random outcomes to random events
- Mythical timeline
