ATOMS

1. Nucleus

   • In the middle of the atom
   • Contains PROTONS and NEUTRONS
   • Has an overall positive charge because of protons
   • Most weight comes from nucleus

2. Electrons

   • Move around the nucleus
   • Negative charge
   • Tiny but cover a lot of space
   • Have hardly any mass
   • Occupy the shells which surround the nucleus

3. Particle

   • Proton
     • Mass: 1
       • Charge: +1
   • Electron
     • Mass: Very small
       • Charge: -1
   • Neutron
     • Mass: 1
       • Charge: No charge

4. Neutal atoms have no charge overall

5. Neutral atoms have the same number of protons and electrons

6. If protons or electrons are added/ taken away, the atom becomes charged. making it an ion

   • Atomic number (number of protons)
   • Mass number: Total number of protons and neutrons
     • 11 protons so 12 neutrons
     • Mass is always the biggest number
     • Tends to be around about double the number of protons
