1. viruses

   • A piece of code which is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.
   • Malware
     • Software which is specifically designed to disrupt or damage a computer system.
   • Types of virus
     • Trojan Horse, scareware, spyware, worm
       • Trojans, as in 'Trojan Horse', are a type of computer virus which can be installed on your computer without you realising. Trojans can install a 'keystroke logger', which records all the keys you press on your computer keyboard.
       • Scareware is a type of malware designed to trick victims into purchasing and downloading useless and potentially dangerous software.
     • A computer worm is a standalone malware computer program that replicates itself in order to spread to other computers
     • Spyware is software that aims to gather information about a person or organization without their knowledge

2. Hacking

   • Gain unauthorized access to data in a system or computer.
   • The computer misuse act (1990)
     • You need to be familiar with the following ideas about data and computer misuse: that data stored electronically is easier to misuse; that software should not be copied without permission; the consequences of software piracy; that hacking can lead to corruption of data, either accidentally or on purpose.
