2. used to locate subsets of features with composite system for presentation eye witnesses

3. based on idea that memory trace of a crime has components

   • central
     • important details such as who did what and when
   • peripheral
     • what they were wearing the objects present etc

4. theoretically best real achieved when as many components are activated as possible

   • ye witness asked to reinstate the content: recreate the event in his/her mind
     • report everything through free recall: memories come to mind beyond request

5. people sometimes report what they ecpevt to have happened and not what actually happened
