Machining Processes
- There are four types of machine processes which are, one off/ jobbing, batch production, mass production and continuous production.
Forming Processes
- Sandcasting is a metal forming process that uses sand as a mould material.
- Permanent mould casting is a metal forming process that employs reusable moulds.
- Investment casting is an industrial process also known as lost-wax casting.
- Die casting is a metal casting process which is characterized by forcing molten metal under high pressure.
Robots
- Robots are used for many jobs such as lifting heavy weights and doing dangerous jobs like working with radioactive substances.
CNC Machinery
- Computer numerical control, this means a computer converts the design produced by computer aided design software into numbers.
Materials
- Mild steel is the most common material in the manufacturing process because it is the cheapest metal. Aluminium is used to make expensive products.
Optical Fibres
- Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber. The light forms an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry information.
Hydrogen fuel cells
- Hydrogen fuel cells is a alternative cleaner fuel than using petrol and diesel. The hydrogen fuel cells give off a lower amount of pollution unlike regular petrol and other fuels.
Telematics
- Telematics is a field of telecommunications, vehicular technologies, road transportation, road safety, etc.
Blended wing bodies
- Plane wings are blended together so the plane is faster and has a better aerodynamic perfomance.
Bionics
- Bionics is the application of biological methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology.
Sustainability
- Sustainable engineering is the process of designing or operating systems such that they use energy and resources sustainably,
Four R's
- Recycle
- Take an existing product that has become waste, and use the materials or parts for another purpose, without processing it.
- Reuse
- Take an existing product that has become waste and reprocess the materials to use in a new product.
- Recover
- Finding ways to create energy from waste that has been disposed of. Modern technology allows us to treat waste using thermal and non thermal processes to produces heat, gas, oil or electricity.
- Reduce
- Minimise the amount of material and energy you use.
- Recycle
