Data Transferring Technologies

  1. Internet

    • The internet is a very large global network using public telecommunications to which other networks can be connected to transfer data between networks. Almost anyone can use the internet so any data is transferred over the internet is not very secure
  2. Connecting Networks

    • Networks are used to transfer data between computing devices. Networks can be connected using cables(wires) that go to each computing device. There is a hub, switch or router to which all the devices such as desktop computers, servers and printers connect. Wired networks can work at very high speeds.
  3. Connecting when Mobile or Travelling

    • Many hotels, cafes, and shops offer free wireless networking to their guests and customers but some make a high charge for its use. Mobile phones, smart phones and other portable devices can use the mobile phone telecommunication networks called 3G or 4G networks, to connect to networks amd the internet
  4. Emails

    • Emails are sent from a device such as a smartphone to an email server which sends the emails to other servers and then to the email inbox of the recipient. Email was originally designed for sending simple messages but it is now possible to attach files such as photographs, documents and video for sharing with others.
  5. File Sharing

    • Files can be shared by using a file server. The file is uploaded to the server where it is stored until another person downloads it and opens it. Peer-to-peer file sharing is used to transfer a file directly from one device to another without using a file server
  6. Cloud Computing

    • Cloud Computing is online file storage. Users do not know exactly where the servers are based and only access their files on the servers over the internet. The company hosting the file servers is responsible for ensuring that the data is kept safe and secure. This type of storage can be cost-effective for smaller businesses that do not have their own servers.
  7. Data Transfer Speeds

    • More data can be transferred in a set time over wired networks than wireless networks so wired networks are usually faster than wired networks
  8. Bandwidth

    • Band width is measured in bits per second. The available bandwidth will determine how fast a file such as a video or audio file can be downloaded.
  9. File Compression

    • Compressing digital video and audio files to make them small enough to be streamed over low bandwidth connections allows them to be played on smartphones and other portable devices. However, highly-compressed video and audio is poor quality and only suitable for small devices.
  10. Router Technology

    • Routers transmit data round networks. High speeds are achieved by the use of copper and fibre cables or, in the case of wireless routers, by the use of different frequency bands being combined together to increase bandwidth
  11. Optimisation of files

    • Files are optimised for transfer to give short download times or faster streaming of the video or audio. Optimisation of video and audio files usually involves reducing the frame rate, reducing the dimensions of the video frame and compressing the audio by changing the sampling rate
