interviewes
STRUCTURED: interviewer is strict instructions on how to ask questions , its conducted in the same standardised way, word by word
- PRACTICAL
- don't need to really train the interviewers , straightforward and straight forward , much quicker than an unstructured interviews , easy to quantify
- RESPONSE RATE
- there's a better chance of obtaining representative data, there is a higher response rate , young and willmott were able to interview 987 people only 54 refused , its harder to turn someone down face to face , higher reponse rate increases the represenativness however it could produce unrepresentative data as well as the same kind of people will be the ones with time to participate
- PRACTICAL
UNSTRUCTURED INTERVIEWS : guided conversation , there is complete freedom
- RELIABILITY :
- Flexibility
- Interviewer is not restricted to what kind of questions they ask , they can ask what they are interested in and what they feel is relevant to the hypothesis
- FEMINISTS CRITICS:
- survey method treats women isolated and oppresses them as they have no power , unequal relationships between sexes
- mirrors women's isolation in society
- ADVANATGES
- RAPPORT AND SENSITITY
- Able to gain the pps trust by forming a relationship , encouraging the interviewee to be at ease and open up
- example labov
- CHECKING UNDERSTANDING
- interviewer is able to explain to the pps what is being asked , and even ask follow up questions improving the validity of the data
- RAPPORT AND SENSITITY
- DISADVANTAGES
- PRACTICAL :
- TIME AND SAMPLING SIZE: being in depth takes a lot of time therefore only a small amount of people can be interviewed creating smaller sample
- TRAINING: interviewers need to be trained in order to know how to interact with pps , this can add cost
- REPRESENTATIVENESS
- the smaller number of pps involved means the sample is not representative
- RELIABILTY
- not reliable because they are not standardised each interview is unique and differs so it cant be replicated in exactly the same way
- VALIDITY
- these interview are generally producing valid data , however critics argue , the relationship can distort the information obtained
- PRACTICAL :
INFLEXABILITY
- lacks validity cos it doesn't reflect the interviewers concerns and priorities , thereby losing valuable insight
SEMI STRUCTURED : lies in-between the two has the same set of questions but the interviewer can provide more information if needed
GROUP INTERVIEWS : with a dozen or so people being interviwed at the same time. Willis used group interviewsas a part of his research with the lads
- RLIABILITY
- Ensure that each interview is conducted in the same way so the interview can be repeated , they will get very similar results , they can then compare results - similarities and differences
- VALIDITY
- people may exaggerate and lie , giving false data . gender, ethnicity ,age and gender can effect the answers as the interviewee may want to impress
- usually closed question so the pps is restricted to certain answers , if non suits the pps then the data collected will be invalid , they have very little freedom , interviewee may not understand the question but the interviewer usually has to move on .
