1. involves 3 basic processes that form mental representations and operate on them

   • encoding = perceiving, recognising and processing an object/event so that it can be remembered
     • the way info is encoded into a mental representation makes a substantial diff in how well it is remembered. events are forgotten because they were not well-encoded
       • encoding -> successful storage of events. mental representation in LTM. held for brief period in STM.

2. Memory Failure

   • failure to transfer info from STM -> LTM. retrieval = searching LTM and finding the event that has been encoded and stored. if not retrieved successfully = inaccessible to consciousness
