JURIES

1. Qualifications

   • Aged between 18-70.
   • Registered as a parliamentary or government elector.
   • Lived in the UK for 5 years since age of 13.

2. Disqualifications

   • Imprisonment or detention for life
   • Detention at her majesty's pleasure
   • A term of imprisonment or detention for 5 years or more.
   • Disqualified whilst on bail
   • Failing to declare any of this will result in fine of up to 5,000

3. Ineligibility

   • A person suffering a mental disorder (criminal justice act 2003)
   • Lacking capacity; foreign, disability

4. Excusals

   • Full timed armed forces.
   • Wedding
   • Holiday
   • Ignoring summons results in up to a £1,00 fine.

5. Selection

   • Done by a crown court offical
   • When jurors arrive they will be shown a short film about their role.
   • 15 potential jurors are chosen from the jury pool to go into the court room.
     • 12 are chosen at 'random' in court by the clerk.

6. Vetting.

   • Both the prosecution and defence have the right to see the list of potential jurors and may decide if it needs to be 'vetted'
   • Routine police checks to eliminate those disqualified R V Mason.
   • Wider background check; rarely used
