    1. The method
      1. Add dilute nitric acid

      2. Depending which halide ion is present, a different precipitate forms
        1. Iodide forms a yellow precipitate
          1. Bromide forms a cream precipitate
            1. Chloride forms a white precipitate
            2. Ammonium ions
              1. The method
                1. Mix the sample with dilute sodium hydroxide solution
                  1. Warm it using a Bunsen burner flame
                    1. Ammonia gas released if there are ammonium ions
                      1. Gas has distinctive smell and turns red litmus paper blue
