   • Stages
     • Duration - 18-30 seconds
       • Peterson and Peterson - supports that duration of STM is 18-30 seconds
     • Encoding - acoustically
       • Conrad - supports STM codes acoustically
     • Capacity - 5-9 items
       • Jacobs - suggest capacity of STM is limited
       • Miller - suggest capacity coukd be larger if we chunk information.

2. Sensory Register

   • Stages
     • Encoding - echoic/iconic/haptic
       • Crowder - show different stores exist.
     • Capacity - large
       • Sperling - supports SR has a large capacity.
       • Javitt et al - suggest individual differences in SR capacity.
     • Duration - limited
       • Sperling - supports the suggestion that SR has limited duration.
       • Walsh and Thompson - suggest SR is limited and dependant on age.

3. Long Term Memory

   • Stages
     • Duration - unlimited
       • Bahrick - shows memory for faces is long lasting
       • Goldman and Seaman - suggests duration is long lasting
     • Encoding - Semantically
       • Baddeley - findings suggest that the nature of encoding is different in STM and LTM
     • Capacity - unlimited
       • Wagenaar - suggest capacity of LTM is large

4. Cases

   • Clive Wearing - supports there are separate components of memory.
   • HM - MSM of Memory must be too simple
   • KF - supports there are separate stores that are located in different places.
