Idea 1: Crane Traffic Light System

1. Problem

   • Looking Up Distracted From road
     • Could Crash into the cranes/road barriers/other vehicles
     • Could fall into the dock or the River Thames

2. Will Need To Do

   • Make brackets for chosen solution
   • Add to the PLC programme and fit it into existing programme
   • Source Parts
     • Cables
     • Traffic Lights
     • Beros/Switches/Encoders

3. Decision

   • Which Solution will be most cost effective
   • How long will it take to install
   • How long will it last?
   • How easy is it to maintain

4. Design

   • Encoder
     • Mounted onto a wheel on the trolley
       • Modification to PLC programme
   • Switches
     • 2 way Switches
       • Mounted to a plate that's welded to the crane
         • Switches made when trolley goes past
           • Modification to PLC programme
   • Bero's
     • 4 Beros Needed
       • Mounted to a plate that's welded to the crane
         • 2 beros each side
           • Dependant on which bero is made first to if the light changes to if the vehicle can pass under the crane
             • Modification to PLC programme

5. Solutions

   • Encoders
   • Bero's
   • Switches

6. Planning

   • Talk to suppliers
     • Order Materials
   • Go and look up crane at where solutions can be fixed
     • look to see where brackets can be mounted
       • Make up brackets and fix switches or beros to them
     • Look to see where encoders could be mounted
   • Design PLC programme
     • Compare to crane PLC programme
       • To make sure it doesn't interfere with any other crane functions
   • Plan with operations department for use of cranes
     • To not interfere with shipping
     • So training is not done on that crane whilst the installation and testing is taking place

7. Testing

   • Test on a smaller scale in workshop before installation
   • compare PLC programmes before putting it into the crane PLC
   • Test once installed on the crane
