5.0 Wireless Personal Area Network

5.0 Wireless Personal Area Network

1. Group of technologies that are designed for short-range communications

2. Application for WPAN : Synchronizing PDAs, cellular, and Smartphones/ Home control systems (smarthome)/ Cordless telephones/ Portable device data exchange

3. Advantages ; WPAN devices use very little power /Short range helps maintain security and privacy

4. Existing and Future Standards

   • Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
   • Interoperability
   • IEEE 802.15.1 and Bluetooth
     • - Industry specification
     • - Defines small-form-factor, low-cost wireless radio communications
     • IEEE licensed this wireless technology
     • 802.15.1 standard
     • Security in Bluetooth WPANs
       • Bluetooth provides security at the LMP layer
       • Authentication is based on identifying the device itself
       • Authentication scheme is a challenge-response strategy
       • Encryption is the process of encoding communications

5. ZIGBEE

   • Emerging standardized protocol for Ultra Low Power Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs)
   • ZigBee is an established set of specifications for wireless personal area networking (WPAN)
   • targeted at radio-frequency (RF) applications which require a low data rate, long battery life, and secure networking.
   • Zigbee is set of high level communication protocols based upon the specification produced by 802.15.4 - standard for wireless personal area networks (WPANs)
   • ZigBee Vs Bluetooth
     • ZigBee targets low data rate, low duty cycle
     • Bluetooth targets medium data rate continuous duty

6. A personal area network (PAN) is a computer network used for communication among computer devices (including telephones and personal digital assistants) close to one person

7. A wireless PAN consists of a dynamic group of less than 255 devices that communicate within a range of about a 33-feet.
