Relative Charge Proton +1 Neutron 0 Electron -1
If an atom loses one or more electrons, it becomes a positively charged ion
- If an atom gains one or more electrons, it becomes a negatively charged ion
Atoms can lose or gain electrons. When they do, they form changed particles called ions
The atomic number of an atom is how many protons it contains. The mass number is how many protons and neutrons it contains.
- The number of protons and electrons in an atom always stays the same so the atomic number also tells you how many electrons there are
- You can calculate the individual amount of Neutrons because you subtract the atomic number from the mass number. This will separate the amount of neutrons and protons.
Isotopes are the atoms of an element with different numbers of neutrons. They have the same proton number, but different mass numbers
