WAVES
Waves involve the transport of energy without the transport of matter. can be described as a disturbance that travels through a medium, transporting energy from one location (its source) to another location without transporting matter.
MECHANICAL WAVES
- A mechanical wave is a wave that is an oscillation of matter, and therefore transfers energy through a medium. the wave travels is called the medium plural, media
- TRANSVERSE WAVES
- transverse wave is a moving wave whose oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of the wave or path of propagation.
- Example: waves that can be created on a horizontal length of string by anchoring one end and moving the other end up and down.
- Parts: The crest is the top of the wave. The trough is at the bottom of the wave. The wavelength is the length of the wave. The amplitude of a wave is the highest amount of vibration that the medium gives from the rest position.

- COMPRESSIONAL WAVE
- (such as a sound wave) propagated by the elastic compression of the medium, they are also called longitudinal wave
- ripples on the surface of water. vibrations in a guitar string. a Mexican wave in a sports stadium.

ELECTROMAGNETIC WAVES
- Electromagnetic waves are also called EM waves, they are waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field
- Example: include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays. Radio waves have the lowest energy and frequency and the longest wavelength.
- Parts: Radio waves, gamma-rays, visible light, and all the other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum are electromagnetic radiation.
