Topic 10
A spread sheet application such as exel can store all its data in a single file.
- The file is called a workbook
A workbook is made up of one or more 'worksheets'
- A worksheet is a single tab in the spreadsheet workbook
A cell reference always starts with a letter and ends with a number e.g. A5 or H28
A range of cells is a set of cells in a row or column
Data entered into cells can be different data types e.g. text, number, currency, date, etc.
Each cell can contain, labels, data and formulas and functions
Formulas must start with an =
Formulas perform calculations on cell content
Formulas appear in the formula bar
The result of the formula is automatically recalculated every time the data on a spreadsheet changes
Functions must start with an =
Functions are part of spreadsheet software
Function names describe what a function can do e.g. SUM, COUNT, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, IF
The content of a cell can be formatted
You can format the font style, size, colour, border style, alignment, cell colour
You can use graphs and charts
Using graphs and charts allows us to notice patterns and trends more easily
A relative cell reference is when you drag down a formula the cell reference is changed. This is because its uses the relative address of the cells based on their position on the worksheet
An absolute cell reference is when you use the $ character in front of the letter and number that are required to stay the same (glued)
benefits of using a spreadsheet
- Automatic recalculation
- Accurate calculations
- Graphs/Charts
- Replication
allow you to make and test predictions
allow you to see what would happen if certain figures were changed
