White Blood Cells (Leucocytes)
- Colourless, no haemoglobin
- Irregular in shape, has a nucleus
- Can move & change its shape
- Phagocytes
  - ingest foreign particles like bacteria
  - lobed nucleus
  - granular cytoplasm
- Lymphocytes
  - large rounded nucleus
  - small amount of non-granular cytoplasm
  - limited movements
  - Produce antibodies
Red Blood Cells (Erythrocytes)
- Contains Haemoglobin
  - Iron containing protein
  - Transport oxygen
- Circular flattened biconcave disc
  - increase SA to VR
    - absorb and release o2 at a faster rate
- No nucleus
  - can carry more haemoglobin, more o2
- Elastic, can turn bell-shaped
  - squeeze through blood vessels
- Produced by bone marrow, destroyed in the spleen
  - Haemoglobin released from destroyed rbcs brought to liver and broken down
Platelets (thrombocytes)
- membrane bound fragments of cytoplasm
- takes part in clotting of blood
