Multiplicative Properties

1. Associative

   • Proportional Adjustment: Doubling and halving, thirding and trebling
     • 20 X 15 as 10 x 30 = 300
   • Factorisation
     • 15 x 4 is the same as 15 x 2 x2 = 60

2. Distributive

   • Tidy Numbers
     • Rounding and compensating
       • 38 x 5 = 190. 38 is rounded to 40 to make 40 x 5 then 2 x 5 is subtracted
     • Place value partitioning
       • 38 x 5...solve 30 x 5 then add 8 x 5
         • ARRAYS
   • Splitting factors
     • Place value partitioning

3. Commutative

   • Changing the order of the factors still gives the same answer
     • 8 x 5 = 40 and 5 x 8 = 40

4. Inverse

   • Multiplication is the inverse of division so a problem can be reversed to work out the answer.
     • 8 x 5 = 40 and 40/5 = 8
