Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences
According to Howard Gardner, “intelligence” is a very broad term, and there is not only “one intelligence”, but several types of it
at least 9 types
- Naturalist (nature smart)
- They learn best working outside and observing nature.
- Musical (sound smart)
- They learn best using rhythm or with music on
- Logical-mathematical (number/reasoning smart).
- They profit from asking questions, categorizing and working with patterns.
- Existential (life smart)
- Interpersonal (people smart)
- They profit from cooperating, working in groups and sharing
- Bodily-kinesthetic (body smart).
- They learn best by moving, touching and doing
- Linguistic (word smart)
- They improve saying, hearing and reading words
- Intra-personal (self-smart)
- They work better alone
- Spatial (picture smart).
- They learn best by visualizing and using the “mind’s eye”.
- Naturalist (nature smart)
Taking all this into account, English teachers can enrich their lessons by systematically activating different intelligences so that students feel better cared for in the class
- This also enables teachers to appreciate hidden strengths in their students and to provide funnier and more appealing lessons
