Composite materials
Definition
- In materials science they are called composite materials those materials that are formed by the union of two or more materials to get the combination of properties that is not possible get in the original materials.
- Materials are composites when they meet the following characteristics:
- They are made up of two or more physically distinguishable and mechanically separable components. They have several phases chemically distinct, completely insoluble in each other and separated by an interface. Its mechanical properties are superior to the simple sum of the properties of its components (synergy). They do not belong to composite materials polyphase materials, such as metal alloys, in which heat treatment changes the composition of the phases present.2
