Inductors
An inductor is a frequently employed electrical component in electric circuits. It functions by inducing changes in the current and temporarily storing energy within a magnetic field when current passes through its coil. Subsequently, it releases the stored energy back into the circuit.
- They are used in radio frequency systems, power supplies, power converters, noise reduction in circuits operating at high frequencies, etc.
Inductance
- Inductors possess a property called inductance, which represents their ability to store energy in a magnetic field. The unit of measurement for inductance is the Henry (H)
Composition
- It consists of a coil that is insulated and wrapped around either air or a core material, with two terminals provided. This configuration enhances the magnetic field
Difference between capacitors and inductors
- Inductors and capacitors are distinct from each other in terms of energy storage. While capacitors store energy as electrical energy, inductors store energy in the form of magnetic energy
Types of inductors
- There are many types of inductors that have multiple uses such as: Air-core Inductors, Iron-core Inductors, laminated-core Inductors, Powdered Iron-Core Inductor, etc.
How does it works?
- When an electric current passes through a conductor, it generates a very small magnetic field in the conductor. By winding this conductor material into a coil shape of an inductor, the magnetic field is strengthened. This is due to the relationship between the magnetic field and the electric current, such that any changes in the electric current will cause corresponding changes in the magnetic field. As the current flows through the inductor's coil, the magnetic field expands and stabilizes. The energy is stored within this magnetic field as long as the current continues to flow through the coil.
Why is it important?
- It aids in regulating and controlling the flow of electric currents within a circuit by moderating their passage, while storing energy in a magnetic field. Additionally, it serves to mitigate abrupt changes, like electrical spikes, in a circuit to ensure a more stable current
Reflection
- My reflection about this is that probably we have encountered devices that use inductors in our daily life to control the electric current of circuits. I also found very important that inductors have great importance in our daily life
