Planning Lessons and Courses

  1. Planning is a Thinking Skill

    • Planning helps teachers think carefully about what students need and how lessons should develop.
      • Teachers predict possible classroom situations.
        • Good planning improves organization and confidence.
          • Teachers should think about students’ level, interests, and difficulties.
            • Planning includes objectives, materials, activities, and timing.
  2. How Do People Learn Languages?

    • People learn languages through exposure, practice, interaction, and meaningful communication.
      • Interaction with others supports communication skills. Real-life situations make learning more meaningful.
        • Practice and repetition help language development.
          • Mistakes are a natural part of learning.
  3. Sequencing Lesson Components

    • Lessons should follow a logical order to help students understand and learn better.
      • Good sequencing keeps students focused and interested.
        • Variety helps maintain attention.
          • Typical lesson sequence: Warm-up, Presentation, Practice, Production, and feedback
  4. Formal Lesson Planning

    • Formal lesson plans organize teaching in a detailed and structured way.
      • Formal planning helps teachers stay organized.
        • Teachers may adapt plans during class if necessary. Plans can include possible problems and solutions.
          • Common parts of a lesson plan: Topic, Objectives, Materials, Procedures, Timing, and Assessment
  5. Unrealistic Requirements

    • Sometimes teachers or institutions expect too much in too little time.
      • Some learning goals may be difficult to achieve quickly. Large classes and limited time create challenges.
        • Teachers should set realistic expectations. Excessive pressure can reduce motivation.
          • Examples of unrealistic expectations: Expecting perfect fluency very fast, Teaching too much content in one lesson, and Ignoring students’ real level
  6. Lesson Aims

    • Lesson aims describe what students should learn or achieve by the end of the class.
      • Aims give direction to the lesson. Good aims are clear and realistic.
        • Aims can focus on grammar, vocabulary, skills, or communication.
          • Examples of lesson aims: Improve speaking fluency, Practice past tense verbs, Develop listening comprehension
  7. Alternatives to Formal Planning

    • Some teachers prefer flexible or less detailed planning styles.
      • Not all teachers use long written lesson plans. Experienced teachers may use notes or mental planning.
        • Teachers sometimes adapt lessons according to classroom situations.
          • Examples of alternative planning: Short notes, Mind maps, Checklists, and Mental planning
  8. Planning a Course

    • Course planning organizes learning objectives and content over a longer period of time.
      • Teachers decide what students should learn during the course.
        • A balanced course includes different language skills and activities.
          • Things teachers consider when planning a course: Time available, Student goals, Curriculum requirements, Resources and materials, and Evaluation methods
