DATA PROTECTION

1. Malware

   • A piece of software which is designed to disrupt or damage a computer system (malicious-harmful)
   • Viruses
     • Spyware
       • This installs itself onto your device and steals all your personal information. It does key logging which keeps a record of what you type in. It can also use your webcam without your knowledge
     • Trojan
       • Will pretend to be a useful and safe program but will actually try and attack your device.
     • Worms
       • These spread from device to device but copy themselves. So if you get a worm virus, it's very hard to get rid of it because its hard to find the source of it
     • Scareware
       • Designed to trick a user into buying and downloading unnecessary and potentially dangerous software, such as fake antivirus protection.

2. Hacking

   • Hacking is where you gain unauthorized access to a web page
   • Prevention
     • Install a firewall
     • Computer control

3. Phishing

   • Attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details (and sometimes, indirectly, money), often for malicious reasons
   • To stop this. You can either not open an email that look suspicious. Or to see if a website is secure, took for an S after HTTP or a padlock icon

4. Legislation (legal)

   • Computer misuse act of 1990
     • Unauthorised access to computer material. Unauthorised access with intent to commit or facilitate a crime. Unauthorised modification of computer material. Making, supplying or obtaining anything which can be used in computer misuse offences.
   • Data protection act
     • The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland which defines UK law on the processing of data on identifiable living people. It is the main piece of legislation that governs the protection of personal data in the UK.
